New true crime drama The Act follows the harrowing tale of Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy Rose.

Dee Dee was murdered by Gypsys boyfriend Nick after Gypsy endured medical abuse at the hands of her mother for years.

Its believed that Gypsy suffered this abuse because her mother suffered from Munchhausen syndrome by proxy, which is a mental illness characterised by a caretaker fabricating and/or causing injury to or illness in the person theyre caring for with a view to gaining attention and/or sympathy.

While Gypsy didnt commit her mothers murder herself, Nick, who is now serving a life sentence for killing Dee Dee, has said that Gypsy was the mastermind behind the crime.

Dee Dee lied about Gypsys age, saying she was born in 1993 and 1995 when in fact Gypsy was born 1991.

She also shaved Gypsys head regularly, so that it looked like she had gone through chemotherapy recently, and made her use a wheelchair.

Gypsy Rose ended up undergoing a number of surgeries which is has now been established were unnecessary, as well as taking injections and medications which caused her to loose her teeth and which induced symptoms of the various ailments which Dee Dee said Gypsy suffered from.
